Believe it or not wedding history from the Roman era suggests that evil spirits or tricksters were a threat to those that were to marry and declare their love for each other. In order to prevent the evil spirits from causing trouble for the couple on their wedding day they invited ten witnesses to be present at their wedding ceremony. The witnesses would dress in the same type clothing as the bride and groom to confuse the spirits from the completion of their wicked plans to rob the couple of their happiness.
These witnesses became what we now call the bridal party. Of course the number of witnesses vary and so does their wedding attire. The bridal party members main "job" is still to see to the happiness of the couple that are being married but their is little talk regarding the existence of evil spirits in today's wedding planning.
It is customary for the bride and groom to honor their bridal party by selecting thanking you gifts for each of them. These gifts need not be really expensive. Gifts are usually a small token of appreciation and
personalized gifts are usually well received by all the members of the bridal party.
